A manufacturer of resin-mixed pipes explains what pipe jacking is.
Pipe jacking is a concealed excavation method used when constructing tunnels or underground pipelines across various obstacles, such as railways, roads, rivers, or buildings.
During construction, a hydraulic jack supported on the rear seat of the foundation pit uses force-transmitting jacking irons and guide rails to press the pipe into the soil. Simultaneously, soil in front of the pipe is removed and transported away. Once a section of pipe is fully inserted into the soil, the next section is connected and jacked in again. This process continues, with each section of pipe being jacked in, and the joints are connected, creating a culvert.
Pipe jacking is particularly suitable for constructing culverts beneath existing buildings, transportation routes, or rivers and lakes. Pipe jacking methods are categorized by excavation method, including mechanical excavation, compression jacking, hydraulic excavation, and manual excavation.
Types of Pipe Jacking
Long-Distance Pipe Jacking
Ordinary pipe jacking typically involves a distance of ≤100m without a relay ring (some experts believe this could be increased to 300m). Long-Distance Pipe Jacking is >100m, and the maximum distance is >1000m.
Large-Diameter Pipe Jacking
In the past, the maximum diameter of a pipe jacking was generally considered to be 3m. Pipe jacking in countries like Japan and Germany can reach diameters of up to 4-5m.
Micro-Pipe Jacking
In the past, pipe jacking typically had a diameter of ≥300mm, with diameters as small as 75mm.
Pipe Jacking Classification by Diameter:
Large Diameter: ≥2000mm
Medium Diameter: 1200-2000mm
Small Diameter: 500-1200mm
Micro Diameter: ≤500mm
Curved Pipe Jacking
S-shaped curves, combined horizontal and vertical curves, and curves with a small radius of curvature.
Automatic Control
Automatic measurement, recording, and correction should be included in the plan comparison, if possible.
