Pipe jacking is a trenchless construction method that developed after the shield tunneling method. In recent years, an increasing number of pipe jacking machines have been widely used in underground space development. These machines primarily include earth pressure balance (EPB), slurry balance (SBA), and air pressure balance (APB). Different types of pipe jacking machines are suitable for different strata and require varying degrees of precision in controlling construction parameters. Therefore, the appropriate pipe jacking machine should be selected based on the specific geological conditions.

An EPB pipe jacking machine (EPB) begins with the jacking equipment in the launch shaft pushing the tool tube forward. The cutterhead cuts the soil at the tunnel face, and the loosened soil falls into the soil chamber. The rotating stirring rod mixes it into a semi-solid state with a certain degree of flowability, generating a certain amount of soil pressure. The soil is then transported via a screw conveyor.

The EPB pipe jacking machine operates by balancing the groundwater pressure and soil pressure at the excavation face with the pressure in the soil chamber within the tool tube. FRP pipe manufacturers control the soil pressure value in the sealed soil chamber by controlling the excavated amount or the jacking speed of the pipe jacking machine, which can be measured by a soil pressure gauge to keep this soil pressure value balanced with the sum of the static soil pressure and the groundwater pressure in front of the tunnel face; or inject a mixture that meets the design requirements into the sealed chamber to achieve the purpose of balancing the groundwater pressure and the front soil pressure with the soil mixture that fills the mud chamber, thereby ensuring the stability of the tunnel face and preventing excessive settlement or uplift of the surface.
